The Faculty of Commerce, Law, and Management (CLM) at the University of the Witwatersrand invites applications for the position of Academic Advisor at Lecturer level. The primary focus of the job is to provide holistic support to undergraduate students in the faculty, in order to enhance the learning environment and improve student success by being responsive to student needs and challenges. Candidates will work closely with members of the CLM Teaching and Learning Unit, including other advisors and the Assistant Deans for Teaching and Learning, as well as a range of faculty and institutional stakeholders.
Qualifications and Experience
- A master’s degree, preferably in higher education or a cognate disciplinary field.
- Evidence of completing the Academic Advising Professional Development (AAPD) short learning programme offered by the UFS would be an advantage.
- Experience working as an academic advisor in the South African public higher education sector for at least two years.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the student lifecycle within South African public higher education contexts.
- Proven ability to develop proactive student initiatives and interventions

- Excellent English oral presentation, facilitation, and communication skills.
- Experience of working with online and digital technologies.
- Excellent organisational and project-management skills.
- Reliability and conscientiousness, with the ability to follow through with responsibilities.
- The ability to be self-directed: anticipating needs and taking initiative.
- The flexibility to adapt, and to optimise resources in an emerging/changing environment.
- The ability to work independently or in a team, and to manage multiple concurrent responsibilities.
- A high level of proficiency in MS Office and related applications, and in using learning management systems.
