About the Role

The Centre for Applied Legal Studies (CALS) is a leading human rights Centre at the School of Law; University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. CALS was established in 1978, and it advances historical and social justice through a combination of research, strategic litigation, teaching, and advocacy. CALS seeks to appoint one candidate attorney to join their team.

Qualifications, Skills, and Experience

  • An LLB or BProc degree
  • A demonstrated commitment to human rights and social justice
  • A strong interest in research
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Proficiency in multiple official South African languages will be an advantage
  • Proficiency in MS Office

Key Responsibilities

  • Drafting pleadings and legal opinions, and participating in strategic litigation
  • Conducting research and assisting in the drafting of research reports
  • Conducting training and workshops
  • Providing input into comments on policies and legislation
  • Liaising with clients, affected communities, counsel, and partners
  • Representing CALS in civil society forums
