About the Role
The Centre for Applied Legal Studies (CALS) is a leading human rights Centre at the School of Law; University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. CALS was established in 1978, and it advances historical and social justice through a combination of research, strategic litigation, teaching, and advocacy. CALS seeks to appoint one candidate attorney to join their team.
Qualifications, Skills, and Experience
- An LLB or BProc degree
- A demonstrated commitment to human rights and social justice
- A strong interest in research
- Good oral and written communication skills
- Proficiency in multiple official South African languages will be an advantage
- Proficiency in MS Office
Key Responsibilities
- Drafting pleadings and legal opinions, and participating in strategic litigation
- Conducting research and assisting in the drafting of research reports
- Conducting training and workshops
- Providing input into comments on policies and legislation
- Liaising with clients, affected communities, counsel, and partners
- Representing CALS in civil society forums
