Clinical Nurse (R/N) - Experienced - NNICU

Job Summary

The Professional Nurse/Clinical Nurse is responsible for the assessment, planning, and implementation of individualised, holistic, and person-centered nursing care of a patient, their families, or the community. They coordinate patient care within a multi-disciplinary health team and use scientifically based nursing theories and processes to treat patients as physical, social, and spiritual individuals.

Consistency of Care

• Serve as a clinical resource in assisting personnel to assess, plan, implement, evaluate, and document nursing care in the unit.
• Ensure communication and interaction with family and health professionals regarding optimal patient care, acting as a patient advocate when necessary.
• Assess, plan, and implement advanced nursing care in a specialized field according to standard nursing care procedures, nursing care theory, and medical direction.
• Initiate, direct, and maintain emergency treatment as indicated.

Scope of Practice

• Interview patients and families to obtain relevant information and evaluate patient needs.
• Participate in the multi-disciplinary team to evaluate, develop, and implement health care plans and treatment regimes.
• Do rounds with physicians to review patient conditions, develop nursing care plans, and participate in patient care.
• Evaluate patient care needs, initiate individualised nursing care plans, and coordinate patient services.
• Prepare shift documentation reflecting patient status, patient/staff ratio, and problems.
• Communicate with the unit manager regarding activities and problems.
• Perform related tasks as requested.

Policy and Procedure Development

Provide input and standards in formulating patient care policy and procedures in the hospital.

Quality and Risk Management

• Ensure a safe, clean, and secure environment for patients, staff, and visitors.
• Optimise and maintain quality, effective, and safe nursing care within the assigned budget.
• Evaluate, set standards, and monitor the safe utilisation of supplies and equipment.

Teamwork

• Actively participate as a team member to achieve goals.
• Co-operate and collaborate with other hospital departments to provide appropriate support services.

Education and Training Facilitation

• Co-ordinate with the Clinical Facilitation Department and other members of the multi-disciplinary team to meet the educational needs of nursing staff, students, and patients.
• Participate in in-service training and orientation of new staff in the unit.
• Advise and inform staff on current and revised policies and procedures.

Resource Allocation

• Allocate staff members to promote optimal use of staff and provide appropriate nursing care for individual patients.
• Adjust staff levels to provide for acuity level needs.

Personal and Professional Development

• Actively involve in own professional development to maintain a satisfactory level of skill and knowledge.
• Keep up to date with Netcare’s evolving policies and procedures.

Build and Maintain Stakeholder Relationships

• Work effectively and co-operatively with others to establish and maintain good working relationships.
• Develop collaborative relationships to help accomplish work goals.
• Maintain and encourage effective communication and interaction within the unit, other members of the multi-disciplinary team, and the public.
• Foster good interpersonal relations and public relations while interpreting and applying the philosophy, goals, objectives, policies, and procedures.

Inherent Requirements

• Registered as a Professional Nurse with the South African Nursing Council.
• Thorough knowledge of general/specialised nursing theory and practice.
• Extensive knowledge of modern nursing care principles and practices.
