Job Description and Responsibilities

The Professional Nurse/Clinical Nurse is responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of individualised, holistic, and person-centred nursing care of a patient, their families, or the community.

Duties include:

• Serving as a clinical resource to assist personnel in assessing, planning, implementing, evaluating, and documenting nursing care.
• Ensuring communication and interaction with family and health professionals regarding optimal patient care.
• Ensuring communication between nursing management and the unit to eliminate patient care problems.
• Assessing, planning, and implementing advanced nursing care in a specialised field.
• Initiating, directing, and maintaining emergency treatment.

Scope of Practice

• Interviewing patients and families to obtain relevant information and assess needs.
• Participating in the multi-disciplinary team to evaluate, develop, and implement healthcare plans.
• Evaluating patients' care needs and initiating individualised nursing care plans.
• Preparing documentation reflecting patient status, staff ratio, and problems.
• Communicating with the unit manager about activities and problems.
• Performing related tasks as requested.

Policy and Procedure Development

• Providing input and standards in formulating patient care policy and procedures.

Quality and Risk Management

• Ensuring a safe, clean, and secure environment for patients, staff, and visitors.
• Optimising and maintaining quality, effective, and safe nursing care within the assigned budget.
• Evaluating, setting standards, and monitoring the safe utilisation of supplies and equipment.

Teamwork

• Actively participating as a member of a team to achieve goals.
• Co-operating and collaborating with other hospital departments.

Education and Training Facilitation

• Co-ordinating with the Clinical Facilitation Department to meet the educational needs of nursing staff and patients.
• Participating in in-service training and orientation of new staff.
• Advising and informing staff on current and revised policies and procedures.

Resource Allocation

• Allocating staff members to provide appropriate nursing care for individual patients.
• Adjusting staff levels to provide for acuity level needs.

Personal and Professional Development

• Actively involving oneself in professional development to maintain a satisfactory level of skill and knowledge.
• Keeping up to date with Netcare's evolving policies and procedures.

Build and Maintain Stakeholder Relationships

• Working effectively and co-operatively with others to establish and maintain good working relationships.
• Maintaining and encouraging effective communication and interaction within the unit and with the public.
• Fostering good interpersonal relations and public relations.

Inherent Requirements

• Registered as a Professional Nurse with the South African Nursing Council.
• Thorough knowledge of general/specialised nursing theory and practice.
• Extensive knowledge of modern nursing care principles and practices.
