Emerging Clinician Scientist / Emerging Scientist in the Faculty of Health Sciences

Job Description
The Faculty of Health Sciences, University of the Witwatersrand, seeks to appoint outstanding early- to mid-career researchers with strong potential to become internationally recognised independent investigators. The successful candidate will be expected to establish or significantly grow an independent research programme within the Faculty aligned to priority health challenges in South Africa and globally. Candidates may build new research initiatives or develop innovative programmes that complement and strengthen existing academic environments. Priority areas include:
- i. Cardiology, with special focus on Hypertension and Cardiovascular Prevention
- ii. Endocrinology, with a special focus on Obesity and Diabetes
- iii. Oncology, preferably with a focus on the nexus of Cancer and Infectious Diseases
- iv. Immunology, with a focus on cellular immunity in relation to infectious diseases or broader translational immunology
- v. Lung disease, including childhood and/or adult acute or chronic respiratory diseases
- vi. Maternal and Child Health, including stillbirths and premature labour
- vii. Infectious Diseases, including antimicrobial resistance, hospital-acquired infections, emerging infections and pandemic threats
- viii. Other high-priority health challenges in South Africa (excluding HIV and TB) will also be considered.
The focus of the position is to support the development of future leaders in clinical research and teaching, with the expectation that the successful candidate progresses to Reader / Associate Professor level within three years.
