The Department of Media Studies is seeking to make an appointment at the rank of Lecturer on a four-year contract to start in July 2026. We envisage that the successful candidate will play a central role in teaching and research that is both theoretically innovative and relevant to media studies in South Africa, in Africa, and globally. Candidates should hold a PhD in media and communication studies or a related discipline. Candidates who have submitted their PhD thesis and are awaiting examination are eligible to apply. The candidate must also have an appropriate publication record and have expert knowledge in one or more of the fields related to media/journalism culture and practice, mixed methods- qualitative and quantitative- in media research, postcolonial media, consumer culture, gender studies, queer theory, and popular culture in Africa. Teaching experience is essential, while experience of supervision and of curriculum and teaching innovation is desirable. The successful candidate will be required to offer wide-ranging teaching across all years of study; to supervise postgraduate students at Honours and MA level, with PhD students being added in time; to be research active in areas related to the discipline; to carry out administrative duties for the department; to contribute to the successful implementation of the Wits Media Studies Intellectual Commons (WMS-IC)- which is a strategic initiative by the department towards high quality research productivity, quality teaching and learning, science engagement, and active academic citizenship in SLLM and the Humanities Faculty as part of the intellectual and public life of the university.
