The Infrastructure Debt team within Old Mutual Alternative Investments is a market-leading institutional debt investor with a focus on structuring and managing unlisted debt extended to South African and African infrastructure projects. The team has been operating since 2012 and is currently managing a growing portfolio of investments valued at ca. ZAR16.5 billion. Being an established debt investor and as part of one of the largest alternative asset managers on the continent, the team is ideally placed to play a meaningful role in the anticipated upswing in private infrastructure investment across various sectors in South Africa.
Who we are
Old Mutual Alternative Investments (OMAI) has set up a specialised business unit focusing exclusively on infrastructure debt investments. Transactions involve unlisted debt, made up predominantly of long-term senior-secured debt and occasional subordinated/mezzanine loans extended to infrastructure projects.
The Cape Town-based team has grown consistently since inception and currently manages a portfolio of investments across more than 40 projects on behalf of its clients. We seek the addition of a passionate senior investment professional to join us at an exciting time servicing a growing number of clients and investments. The ideal candidate has deep experience in the origination, structuring and execution of project finance loan transactions.
Purpose of the Role
This role is primarily accountable for the origination, structuring, execution and management/monitoring of debt transactions covering infrastructure projects. In addition, the role will support strategic business development activities, including representing the business at a senior level, engaging with investors, and developing long-term strategic growth initiatives, including expansion into new markets. The successful candidate will be comfortable in leading and guiding a team of investment professionals in the execution of transactions and will report to the Head of OMAI Infrastructure Debt.
Key Result Areas
- Developing origination strategies to support long-term business growth
- Develop and maintain strong industry networks in support of ongoing deal origination and fundraising initiatives
- Leading the origination, screening, structuring and execution of unlisted loan transactions in the infrastructure sector
- Engaging with project stakeholders and proposing suitable financing solutions for infrastructure projects across different sectors and geographies
- Conducting detailed investment analysis and due diligence on potential investment opportunities
- Reviewing and negotiating legal documentation related to transactions
- Developing well-researched and succinct investment proposals and presenting such to the investment committee
- Overseeing the monitoring and reporting on closed transactions, including engaging on waivers/requests as needed, and providing valuation opinions
- Providing training to team members and/or new recruits as required
- Representing the business at a senior management level, both internally and externally
- Supporting the development of fund strategies and fundraising activities, including the expansion into new markets beyond South Africa
- Assisting in fund marketing strategies and development of thought leadership articles
Skills, Qualifications and Experience Required
- B Comm., B Bus Sci., B Eng. or relevant equivalent tertiary qualifications
- CA (SA) preferable, MBA or CFA advantageous
- Passionate about project finance. Minimum experience of 10-15 years in structuring project debt, including subordinated facilities and preference shares
- Understanding of the credit markets (solid understanding of commonly used credit risk concepts and frameworks)
- Advanced Excel, Word and PowerPoint skills, proven financial modelling experience (specifically on project finance transactions)
- Articulate and confident with strong commercial acumen and negotiation skills
- Established industry network
