Purpose of the Job:
The Transport Manager will oversee all aspects of the transport operations within our Centre of Excellence. This includes managing the availability of staff and vehicles, ensuring compliance with budgetary constraints, and maintaining relationships with service contractors and suppliers. The role will also be responsible for monitoring daily operations, addressing driver and store queries, ensuring adherence to licensing requirements, and overseeing staff performance and development. The Transport Manager will ensure the smooth running of transport operations, aiming for optimal efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
Job Objectives:
Transport Operations Management
- Ensure the availability of staff and vehicles to meet scheduling requirements.
- Manage transport-related expenses, including fuel, repairs and maintenance, staff costs, vehicle hire, tyres, etc., ensuring adherence to budget.
- Select and evaluate service contractors and suppliers, maintaining strong service relationships with various Distribution Centre (DC) environments.
- Monitor daily and weekly registers, including toll cards, attendance, breakdowns, fines, wash bay usage, and pre-/post-inspection trips.
- Address and follow up on daily queries from drivers and stores, ensuring timely resolution.
- Generate and review daily performance reports to track efficiency and identify areas for improvement.
- Oversee any other operational tasks that impact the efficiency of transport operations.
Qualifications:
Essential:
- Grade 12
- Possession of or currently studying towards a relevant tertiary qualification (Transport Management, Logistics, or similar).
Experience:
Essential:
- Proven track record in a management role within transport or logistics.
- Experience in financial and expense management, including budget planning and control.
- Technical knowledge of the transport industry and related operational processes is advantageous.
Knowledge and Skills:
Essential:
- In-depth knowledge of disciplinary and grievance handling procedures.
- Strong interpersonal skills at both management and staff levels, ensuring clear communication and effective relationship-building.
- Excellent leadership skills with a focus on team development and operational efficiency.
- Good computer literacy, including experience with relevant transport management and financial systems.
