Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Music Education
The Wits School of Education invites applications for the position of Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Music Education. We seek highly qualified individuals with excellent academic credentials in teaching and research in Music Education. The ideal candidate should demonstrate adaptability and versatility to contribute to the School’s initial teacher education and postgraduate programmes, research initiatives, and community engagement activities. Candidates should demonstrate: a comprehensive understanding of Music and Music Education theories, pedagogical approaches, and current trends in teacher education, including knowledge of inclusive education practices and adaptive Music Education strategies; expertise in developmentally appropriate music and musicing activities across all school phases (ages 4–18), music literacy and musicing development from early childhood through to adolescence; proficiency in choral assembly/music ensemble, with experience in technique development; curriculum development capabilities, including the ability to innovate and design Music Education programmes aligned with national policy frameworks (e.g., CAPS). The ability to integrate music effectively in cross-curricular themes and life skills development; teaching capabilities encompassing the use of various delivery modes, proficiency in technology integration for Music Education, and assessment; community Engagement and development of Music Education in Schools; ability to play a musical instrument (piano). Minimum Requirements: Lecturer: PhD in Music/Music Education; Expertise in Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) and/or Foundation Phase and/or Intermediate Phase and/or Senior Phase and/or FET Phase. Senior Lecturer: PhD in Music/Music Education; Expertise in ECCE and/or Foundation Phase and/or Intermediate Phase and/or Senior Phase and/or FET Phase. Relevant Experience: Lecturer: Minimum of 2-3 years of Teaching Experience in Higher Education contexts; A minimum of 2-3 years of teaching experience in school contexts would be an advantage; Mentoring of undergraduate students on Teaching Experience/Work Integrated Learning; Supervision of Postgraduate students; Evidence of research outputs. Senior Lecturer: Minimum of 3-5 years of Teaching Experience in Higher Education contexts; A minimum of 3-5 years of teaching experience in school contexts would be an advantage; Experience in mentoring or supervision of undergraduate students on Teaching Experience/Work Integrated Learning; A sustained record of postgraduate supervision; An established independent research profile and evidence of research outputs.
