Job Description

The School of Mining Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, is regarded as the top African mining engineering school/department and currently ranks among the top mining engineering schools worldwide on the QS World University Rankings by subject area. It has a capacity for about 550 undergraduate and 200 postgraduate students, with 23 permanent academic and 12 technical and administrative staff positions. In addition, there are 15 honorary and visiting academics. The school has a strong research record and a supportive system for academic staff development. The School seeks to appoint three permanent and suitably qualified and experienced applicants as lecturers. Applicants must have a strong background in one of the following areas: mine planning (e.g. mine design, mine optimisation, or mine scheduling), surface and/or underground coal mining, and rock engineering in surface and/or underground mining. Applicants must explicitly indicate which position they are applying for.

Minimum requirements:

  • Applicants must be qualified mining engineers or graduates from cognate disciplines with experience in rock engineering or rock mechanics.
  • They must also hold at least a Master’s degree in mining engineering, with at least 50% of the credits in research, and be eligible to enrol in the School’s doctoral programme.
